13TH Vermont Infantry

 Lieutenant Stephen F. Brown Co. K arrived on the field of Gettysburg without a sword (he was arrested for allowing his men to undress their feet to cross a stream) seized a camp hatchet, carried it in the battle and used it to capture a sword from a Confederate officer. Persevering and determined like him were all the men of this regiment of Green Mountain boys. The 13 Vermont statue depicts Brown holding a sword while standing on a hatchet. New England boys do what it takes!
